“Guy Fawkes Night” (altrimenti chiamata “Bonfire Night”) è una celebrazione che ricorre il 5 novembre.
Celebrata in particolare nel Regno Unito, è presente anche nelle ex colonie britanniche.
Viene commemorato con falò e fuochi d’artificio il fallimento della “congiura delle polveri” contro Giacomo I d’Inghilterra nel 1605.
La festa prende il nome dal principale congiurato della cospirazione, Guy Fawkes: il suo fantoccio viene bruciato durante i festeggiamenti.
L’evento ha ispirato il fumetto “V for Vendetta” di Alan Moore, da cui è stato tratto il film “V per Vendetta”. È stato ripreso anche nella trilogia di “Ruby Red”.
Diffusa nella cultura popolare del Regno Unito la filastrocca “Remember remember the fifth of november”:
“Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I see of no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
